I know you’d never believe me reader, but I have a bit of an issue with discipline.
I love it when I am disciplined, but, I have to work hard on it.
I’ve noticed a few things when I am disciplined and I’d like to share with you the benefits of sticking to a plan.
1. Progress – a definite plus here
2. Satisfaction
3. Motivation – when I am disciplined and make progress, I feel satisfied and that motivates me.
One place I find myself applying discipline is Nano!
NaNoWriMo is a good place to start. There’s such motivation with all my fellow Nano-ers. Because the competition is against yourself. Everyone encourages, eggs each other on and supports one another.
You look at your word count and you keep going even when you feel like watching the telly. So I need to keep up the same “stick-to-it-ness” for the rest of the year. Perhaps not to the same degree, but to have a minimum word count for each day.
Where I’m running into trouble is the editing stage. I’ve not finished editing anything, ever. I have to admit to be a little frightened of the process. I don’t know how long I can expect it to take me to edit a book, a chapter, a paragraph or even a line!
I know when I’m writing I can easily write between 1000-1500 words in an hour on a first draft. But as I have not consistently edited any of my writing I don’t know what to expect of myself.
My attempt to rectify this will be trial and error, but I need to start with trying. I will not allow myself to become overwhelmed before I even start.
With this in mind, I will work on editing “Something in the Water” for one hour per day, everyday this week. I’ll report back next Monday with my progress. I need you all to hold me to this plan. I need to be accountable.
LOL Paula. I must say, I never expected an image like that on your blog- sure on my own 😀 but yes, discipline in being a writer. I’ve been thinking a lot about that recently. I even have my newly written page of “everything I do for work”- divided into comments about me as home maker, home educator, activist/writer/educator for a group, and erotic romance author. To say the least, I haven’t made any sense of it yet. I’m still debating what work I’ll do after I get done checking my email. Part of me thinks I should get the ebook formatted for my first novel (my genre sells much better in ebook than print) but I’m torn between wanting to post a blog post a day early, work on editing my second book, or start writing a new book. I think the middle choice is going to win out :
Ha ha Joelle, I hadn’t thought of the bull whip as anything other than that I need one to get me up and working. Not only my writing but with our business.
It seems that no matter how motivated I am in the morning, by the time I get our business stuff sorted my writing motivation has left and I can’t seem to find much to get me going as far as anything is concerned LOL 🙂
yeah, I can have that too… finish all other work and then there’s nothing left for writing 😦 so frustrating
Let me know if you need any help. I have whips in chenille, if that will help. They come in colours, too. But seriously, you know I’m right here for you any time.
If you want to send me the editing you’ve done each day, I’ll look it over and we can discuss it; whatever will help you most. I’m there for you.
I wanna chenille whip 😀
I’ll “whip” you up one, Joelle! 🙂 Be aware, like anything else, they sting if applied hard enough…
LOL
LOL If only I’d know what a frenzy I’d whip up with my picture, I may have posted 2 LOL
Do you actually sell them that you have a going price? 😀
Thanks, I’ll certainly be taking you up on the offer 🙂
Joelle, no, don’t sell them, sorry. They are more about creative fun and use up my extra yarn. Besides, chenille whips don’t hurt (honestly, how much damage can you do with a chenille whip?), but are still a reminder to do stay disciplined.
Paula, looking forward to our next chat. Stay Disciplined. Edit Your Work (and send it to me!) Love you both!
I’m really good at lead-toe boots, too.
